Truck Wash Soap Dilution Ratio and Draw Rate: How to Calculate Your True Cost Per Wash
One of the most common mistakes fleets and wash operators make when comparing chemical products is looking only at the price per gallon or per drum. A $40/gallon concentrate diluted at 1:20 can be dramatically cheaper per wash than a $15/gallon product diluted at 1:5. If you're not calculating true cost per wash, you're comparing the wrong numbers.
The Two Variables That Actually Determine Cost: Dilution Ratio and Draw Rate
Dilution ratio is how much concentrate is mixed with water — for example, a 1:10 ratio means 1 part chemical to 10 parts water. The higher the second number, the less concentrate you're using per gallon of finished solution.
Draw rate is how much of that diluted solution your equipment actually pulls and applies per wash, which depends on your foamer or sprayer settings, nozzle size, and how long each wash cycle runs. Two operations using the identical product and dilution ratio can have very different real-world costs if their equipment draw rates differ.
The Calculation: Image's Touchless 2-Step Kit
-
Touchless Pro 1 & Total Brite 2 Example 1: Foam cannon (40% concentrate / 60% water)
Each gallon of mixed solution contains 0.4 gallon of concentrate.
- Touchless Pro 1 (drum): $17.74 × 0.4 = $7.10 per gallon of mixed solution
- Total Brite 2 (drum): $19.16 × 0.4 = $7.67 per gallon of mixed solution
A 40 oz foam cannon holds 16 oz of concentrate (40% of 40 oz):
- Touchless Pro 1: $17.74 ÷ 128 oz = $0.139/oz × 16 oz = $2.22 per fill
- Total Brite 2: $19.16 ÷ 128 oz = $0.150/oz × 16 oz = $2.40 per fill
- Both steps: $4.62 per truck if one cannon fill per step does one truck. With totes it drops to $1.87 + $1.94 = $3.81.
Why This Matters When Comparing Suppliers
Chemical suppliers quoting price per gallon or per drum without discussing dilution ratios and expected draw rates are giving you an incomplete picture. When evaluating a new product or supplier, always ask for:
- The manufacturer's recommended dilution ratio for your specific application (pre-soak, foam, rinse, etc.)
- Expected or tested draw rate for your equipment type
- Whether the ratio changes for heavier soil loads (winter brine, heavy grease) versus routine washing
Equipment Calibration Matters Too
Even the right product at the right ratio can cost more than expected if your foaming or metering equipment isn't properly calibrated. Equipment that over-draws chemical — whether from worn metering tips, incorrect injector settings, or simple miscalibration — silently inflates your cost per wash regardless of what the math on paper says. Periodic equipment checks against your expected draw rate are worth the time, especially on injector-fed systems that can drift out of calibration over months of use.

Building This Into Your Budgeting
Once you know your true cost per wash, multiply by wash volume to get a much more accurate monthly or annual chemical budget than estimating from drum purchases alone. This also makes it much easier to evaluate whether a water reclaim system or equipment upgrade is worth the investment, since you're working from real cost-per-wash numbers instead of rough estimates.
